Even with a COVID-19 lockdown, the 41st Dora Mavor Moore Awards are taking the “show must go on” maxim to heart with an all virtual presentation this year.

Announced today, the 2020 Dora Awards has released a total of 243 nominations across six divisions.

Leading the pack in the Opera Category is Tapestry Opera with a whopping 13 nods. Tapestry’s Shanawdithit (co-produced with Opera on the Avalon), accounting for eight nominations, and Jacqueline with five.

The Canadian Opera Company takes a total of ten nominations: five for Rusalka, two for Hansel & Gretel and three for Turandot.

Soundstreams’ co-production with Luminato earns them a rare nomination for the criminally underappreciated Hell’s Fury, The Hollywood Songbook.

Musical Stage Company and Obsidian Theatre’s Caroline, or Change lead with eight of the ten productions nominated this year.

In the General Theatre Division, Soulpepper’s The Brothers Size leads with eight nominations out of a total of 18.

Not to be outdone, the Independent Theatre Division favours 20 productions with Coal Mine Theatre’s Marjorie Prime leading the pack with six.

The National Ballet of Canada’s mixed program Angels’ Atlas with Chroma & Marguerite and Armand dominates the Dance division with six of the 17 total production hopefuls.

The 2020 Leonard McHardy and John Harvey Award winner this year is visionary arts manager Monica Esteves. The award acknowledges the vital work of senior theatre, dance and opera administrators with a minimum of ten years of service.

Congratulations to all the nominees!
