About

I’m delighted to welcome you to our 2017 Toronto Summer Music Festival Festival, my first as Artistic Director!  This summer, in celebration of Canada’s Sesquicentennial, we will explore the music of Canada and feature the very best of Canada’s many world-renowned classical performers.

Please join me in welcoming many of my friends to our Toronto stage this summer.  Our season includes a one-week residency by superstar Canadian violinist James Ehnes; acclaimed soprano Soile Isokoski in recital; a tribute to beloved Canadian pianist Anton Kuerti; cherished leading ensembles such as the St. Lawrence and Rolston String Quartets; our own National Youth Orchestra of Canada; and festive TSM traditions A Night at the Opera and the Last Night of the Festival, eh!

I invite you to join us and celebrate the vibrant tradition of music in Canada!

Jonathan Crow
Artistic Director

2017 Academy Programs

Art of Song Program

July 9-23, 2017

Applications are open for the 2017 Academy.

Meet the Mentors, read the Application Requirements, and Apply Now!

This program, for a small cohort of eight singers and four pianists is devoted to the study and performance of Art Song.  During this two-week session, participants study with all faculty members, voice and piano, thus receiving advice from a variety of musical traditions and perspectives.  The session also offers detailed study of text, diction, and action coaching.  Our goal is to provide the selected Fellows the luxury of total immersion in Art Song in a community of artists from around the world.

This year’s Mentors include the great Finnish Soprano, Soile Isokoski, Kammersängerin of the Vienna State Opera, as well as Martin Katz, one of the world’s most celebrated collaborative pianists. Steven Philcox will be coordinating and coaching the Fellows again this summer.

Performance opportunities are paramount in the Art of Song Program and Fellows have the opportunity to perform in Private and Public Masterclasses as well as at ticketed Art of Song Recitals on the Toronto Summer Music Festival stage.

“The Toronto Summer Music Academy is on par with the best song programs in the world, providing nearly unparalleled access to the art form’s leading performers and experts.  It is a program that allows the singer to reconnect with their art and fall in love with music and poetry all over again.  The strength of the Art of Song program is the amount of one-on-one time allocated for each singer and pianist with the visiting artists.  Hardly anywhere else do you truly get to work in depth with such high calibre musicians for that length of time.”

– Mireille Asselin, soprano (2012 TSM Academy Fellow)

CHAMBER MUSIC INSTITUTE

July 10 – August 5, 2017

The Chamber Music Institute for piano and strings welcomes individuals and pre-formed ensembles for intensive coaching sessions, rehearsals, and performances.  The focus is on learning through performance.  Fellows will perform alongside our guest artists as Mentors. With enrolment limited to 18, participating Fellows work with distinguished international faculty in an intimate, collegial atmosphere.  Individual instrumentalists are placed in chamber groups with at least one artist Mentor per group.

Performance opportunities are paramount to this program and selected Fellows will have the opportunity to perform at outreach concerts in the community as well as at weekly Chamber Music reGeneration Concerts that are a part of the Toronto Summer Music Festival.

All applicants receive a full Fellowship to attend and accommodations are provided.

“I love the fact that we the ‘Mentors’ play with the ‘Fellows’, rather than just listen to them and coach them.  I am putting Mentors and Fellows in quotation marks because, when it comes to playing music, we are all equals – music lovers who spend time trying to find the best way to share the music with listeners.”

– Pedja Muzijevic, piano (TSM Academy Mentor)
