About
Cantabile Chamber Singers is an auditioned choir of 16 to 20 voices, formed in 2006 by artistic director Cheryll J. Chung. We perform eclectic and challenging repertoire spanning six centuries. We especially strive to bring Canadian music to audiences while attracting a new generation to choral music. In addition to our concert season we have participated in choral festivals and other events. Contact us for an audition as a singer, as a soloist or to submit a newly written choral work. The Folks Behind It All
Cheryll Chung, Artistic Director
Conductor, pianist, vocal coach, and educator Cheryll Chung has an extensively diverse musical background. She is the founder and artistic director of the Cantabile Chamber Singers. In addition, she holds a Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of Toronto, where she studied choral conducting with her mentor Dr. Doreen Rao and orchestral conducting with Raffi Armenian. She was the recipient of the prestigious Elmer Iseler Fellowship for two consecutive years, the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Scholarship and the John O. McKellar Scholarship.
Cheryll has had the privilege of studying with conductors such as Maestro Helmuth Rilling, Ivars Taurins, and Simon Carrington. She was a conducting fellow at the International Bach Festival, Oregon Bach Festival, Tafelmusik Baroque Institute, Norfolk Conducting Institute and the Choral Music Experience. Cheryll has attended the International Society for Music Education conference in Bologna, Italy; the World Choral Competition in Laval, where she learned from American composer and conductor Eric Whitacre; more recently the PODIUM choral conference, where she worked with the Canadian Chamber Choir. Most recently, she attended the Chorus America Conducting Conference and studied with Maestro David Haye at Mannes College.
In addition to the Cantabile Chamber Singers, Cheryll was the artistic director of the Heliconian Choir and Orchestra, and the York Region Children’s Chorus. She is currently on faculty at the Royal Conservatory of Music, where she conducts the Academy Choir – part of the Phil and Eli Taylor Academy program. She has also worked with High Park Children’s Chorus and the St. Clement’s Orchestra.
