About

Trio Arkel presents world-class performances of great masterpieces of the classical chamber music repertoire, from Baroque to present-day living composers, in beautiful, eclectic and fascinating programs that transport and move audiences.  Our chamber music series features stars of the Toronto music community as well as guest artists of international renown.

Trio Arkel is dedicated to promote and engage all members of our community in the extraordinary world of music and the arts. In addition to our performances, Trio Arkel collaborates with Sistema Toronto, a social development program that uses ensemble-based music education to transform the lives of at-risk children. Through our partnership with Sistema, we provide free music lessons and concert tickets to children in Toronto. We also support the opportunity for music students to attend Trio Arkel performances by offering free tickets to students at the University of Toronto, the Royal Conservatory of Music, and the Etobicoke School of the Arts.

The Folks Behind It All

Marie Bérard | Violin

Marie Bérard is best known as the concertmaster of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra (COC). She is also a sought after chamber musician, soloist, recording artist and teacher. She is on the faculty of the Glenn Gould School in Toronto and is also a member of the acclaimed ARC Ensemble and the Mainly Mozart festival orchestra in San Diego, California. Marie is highly regarded as an interpreter of contemporary music; she has recorded concerti by Schnittke and Kucharzyk, and recently performed major works as soloist with Esprit Orchestra, such as “Offertorium” by Sofia Gubaidulina and “Dedication” by Valentin Silvestrov.

Winona Zelenka | Cello

Winona Zelenka, cello, is Associate Principal cellist of the Toronto Symphony; she has also served as Acting Principal Cellist of that orchestra for five seasons, and for the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. Winona is also Principal Cellist of the Classical Tahoe orchestra, a summer festival ensemble of prestigious musicians from across North America. She is a dedicated recitalist, chamber musician and recording artist; her set of Bach Suites released on Marquis Classics in 2009 was nominated for a Juno award, and her second CD, Connections — of French works for cello and piano with Connie Shih, was critically acclaimed. Her performances on video of Bach and Cassado have garnered thousands of views on Youtube.
