The Alliance for Canadian Musicals is back for a second season of programming as part of the 2026 Toronto Fringe Festival. From June 30 to July 12, 2026, eight Canadian musicals will take the stage at Theatre Passe Muraille.
“The Alliance for Canadian Musicals was formed with the purpose of serving the Canadian musical theatre community. After last year’s tremendous success, we are thrilled to feature eight more Canadian musicals to be seen by audiences, in the hope of nurturing musical theatre development and providing these shows with future opportunities,” says Executive Producer Derrick Chua.
Here’s a look at what’s in store.

Eight Canadian Musicals At Fringe 2026
A Moment for Frayed Nerves (60 mins)
Composed by Kevin Wong
Directed and Choreographed by Alysa Pires
The creators of this experimental musical began with the idea of offering audiences something introspective and comforting. With that in mind, the vignettes that make up the show are inspired by Ghibli cooking scenes, lo-fi study mixes, warm baths and other emotional comfort food. It’s a love letter to modern life in all its emotional range. Original music and choreography combine in this show. The music finds its inspiration in the sounds of Lauridsen choral harmonies, 80s Japanese city pop, 90s early R&B, and 2020s synth pop.
A Non-Canonical Musical Adventure With Pookamhura: Mistress Of B-Roll (90 mins)
Based upon the youtube web-series “Pookamhura: Mistress of B-Roll” by Ghastly
Music, Lyrics and Story by Chris Cracknell. Book and Direction by Brian Morton
Choreography by Mason Micevski
This multimedia musical combines live performance, original songs, and digital projections. The story: waiting for other players to join them, a group of MMO players meet a rogue gnome by the name of Pookamhura — inspired by Puck in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As they wait, original songs and humour tell the story of their history as gamers and people. A secret emerges that challenges the group, causing tension. They’re forced to confront prejudices and biases, and make choices. It’s a story about self-discovery and identity.
Galen’s Grocer: The Musical (60 mins)
Book by Ian Yamamoto. Music by James Atin
Lyrics by James Atin & Ian Yamamoto
Directed by Dave Barclay.
Everyone in Canada hates Galen Easton. This dark comedy follows Galen as he tried to rehabilitate his image by creating a TV sitcom about the difficulties of running a grocery store, titled Galen’s Grover. Oh — and there’s a CEO killer on the loose, just to add to the fun. The original won the Patron’s Pick and TO Star Critic’s Pick at Fringe 2025. The remounts is a new musical adaptation of the show that sold out as Fringe TO last year.
Grey Spaces (90 mins)
Book by Brittany Miranda, Music by Fynn Cuthbert, Lyrics by Brittany Miranda and Fynn Cuthbert Directed by Saphire Demitro. Music Directed by Fynn Cuthbert
This original Canadian dystopian musical is a Bowtie Production. Rowan is a Torontonian, stuck in his daily grind. He meets the girl of his dreams — and dies not long after. Rowan finds himself in a space between life and death where Min, a processing agent, tells him he can come back to earth and relive his life. Grey Spaces explores what happens when we’re all chasing perfectionism and success, and how the pressures can distract us from what’s truly beautiful in life.
Sinner: A One Woman Tragicomedy about Breaking Up with White Jesus (90 mins)
Book, Music and Lyrics by Marla Torgerson
Additional material by Ariyel, Lumia Yates, Laura Jessie Doyle, Miles Foxx Hill, Calo Mesa, Frankie Martinelli
Torgerson was raised in Alberta’s evangelical Bible Belt, and she’s also a classically trained singer. In this show, she blends her operatic background with a razor edge wit to deconstruct fundamentalism in religion. It’s a long and painful process to recognize how men and women are treated so differently by evangelical culture. Marla tackles the prosperity gospel, megachurches, and much more in her searingly funny examination of feminism, patriarchal culture, and true faith.
Songs for Moby Dick (60 mins)
Composed and adapted by Peter Thompson
Directed by Adam Paolozza
Based on the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville
In Songs for Moby Dick, Ishmael is an old man who’s haunted by his memories of the shipwreck that destroyed so many lives. He sings a tale about the experience — the crew, Captain Ahab and his lethal obsession, and, of course, the whale. It’s an operatic epic based on Melville’s original novel that tackles universal themes of nature, destruction, humanity and beauty.
An aging Ishmael staggers onto the stage, haunted by memories of the tragic wreck of the Pequod. He sings a tale about the crew, the whale, and of the obsessive captain Ahab. An operatic epic about beauty, nature, humanity and destruction, based on the novel by Herman Melville. Peter Thompson stars and sings as Ishmael, with Erika Reiman on piano.
The Wounds of Love and Other Gifts (60 mins)
Book, Music, Lyrics and Direction by Bruce Dow
Choreography by Jeff Dimitriou
Music Direction by Ethan Rotenberg
Creator Bruce Dow has a background in existential psychotherapy that infuses this intimate musical theatre work. Dow uses the words of Oscar Wilde and his contemporaries, based on Wilde’s The Happy Prince and Other Tales, to examine these of love and sacrifice. What does it really mean to care for another? What does it cost? Fairy tales become encounters with moral dimensions in the work. Dow is a two-time Dora Award winner with five featured roles on Broadway and 12 seasons at the Stratford Festival.

UNSUNG: The Accidental Villains of History (60 mins)
Book, Music and Lyrics by Mackenzie Langdon
Co-directed by Mackenzie Langdon and Jordan Robertson-Reid
Choreographed by Jordan Robertson-Reid.
Historical events are viewed through the lens of farce in this original musical that introduces the audience to characters who unwittingly played key roles in setting up some of the world’s biggest disasters. They include the admissions director who told Hitler he was rejected from art school, and the guard who let in the Trojan Horse, and five other untold stories. These tales are told with humour and catchy tunes in this blend of history and laughs.
