Arcadi Volodos takes over the top spot on the Classical Chartz this week with his Schubert & Schumann album. He makes the leap from No. 6 last week. At No. 2 is Sofiane Pamart and Movie, which rises from No. 4.
Jan Lisiecki’s Mozart falls two steps to No. 3, and Camille Thomas’ Rendez-Vous comes in at No. 4. Flautist Jeehee Han rounds out the top five with Reinecke: Flute Works, stepping up from No. 9.
Sinfonia of London, the orchestra whose Puccini Orchestral Works has been taking up space on the Classical Chartz for weeks, adds a second release to the list, and the sole newcomer to the Top Ten: French Orchestral Favourites. The Chandos label album dropped in May.
Sinfonia of London is conductor John Wilson’s handpicked orchestra, and they’ve released a total of 26 albums, including this one, since their relaunch in 2018. The name Sinfonia of London has been used by three different ensembles over the years. It has a long history as a recording orchestra, one that Wilson has re-established with the present lineup. The ensemble’s members consist of principals and leaders from UK and international orchestras, along with acclaimed soloists, and members of prominent chamber groups.
The latest album focuses on a key development in the history of orchestral music.
French orchestral music of the 19th and early 20th centuries se itself apart within the symphonic music tradition with a lyrical and narrative bent that included an emphasis on opera and music for ballet, along with orchestral music. Debussy and Ravel used the orchestra and its colours in revolutionary ways.
The tracks include Paul Dukas’ L’Apprenti sorcier, Debussy’s Claire de lune, Emmanuel Chabrier’s Joyeuse March, Ravel’s Une Barque sur l’océan, Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse macabre, and Suites from Georges’ Bizet’s Carmen. It’s a collection of much loved pieces that will be familiar to most lovers of Western classical music.
The album was recorded in surround sound, and is available in Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio for the audiophiles in the crowd.
