Jan Lisiecki has taken over the No. 1 position on the Classical Chartz this week with his latest release, Mozart. He plays the composer’s piano concertos Nos. 9 and 22 with the Bamberger Symphoniker and conductor Manfred Honeck on the album, released 270 years after Mozart’s birthday.
Holding at No. 2 is French Baroque ensemble Pygmalion and their J.S. Bach: Johannes-Passion. At No. 3, Isata Kanneh-Mason jumps up from No. 5 last week with her new release, Prokofiev.
Rounding out the top five is Sinfonia of London and Puccini Orchestral Works, which holds the line at No. 4, and Yunchan Lim’s Bach Goldberg Variations, which relinquished its No. 1 position after several weeks to land at No. 5.
The sole newcomer to the Classical Chartz Top Ten this week is Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas and her album Rendez-vous, which makes the leap from No. 14 last week to land at No. 9.
Together with pianist Julien Brocal, Camille pairs classical works from the traditional canon with new compositions the duo are calling “Reflections”, “Grace” and “Chimera”. The traditional tracks include well known pieces like Saint-Saëns’The Swan, Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie, or the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria. Several pieces were arranged for cello and piano by Brocal.
The album was recorded during a residency at Tippet Rise’s Oliver Music Barn, located in the foothills of Beartooth Mountain in Montana. Thomas and Brocal have recorded a series of videos that showcase the location along with the music.
