Top ten classical music albums week of November 18 2024

Daniil Trifonov and the Philadelphia Orchestra and My American Story: North rise from No. 2 to No. 1 spot on the Classical Chartz this week, while right behind, Andrea Bocelli’s Duets (30th Anniversary) takes a step up from No. 3 last week to land at No. 2. The fastest rising album on the Classical Chartz Top Ten this week is Québécois composer François Dompierre and Requiem, which made the leap from No. 9 to grab the No. 3 spot this week.

Two new albums make their first appearance on the Classical Chartz Top Ten this week. Roger Eno’s The Skies: Rarities ends up at No. 9 this week, up from No. 11. Released on the Deutsche Grammophon label, the 8-track mini-album incorporates unreleased tracks from previous recording sessions for his album The Skies. The theme running through it: a beautiful, but melancholic expression of the existential threats to the air we breathe by environmental degradation. The tracks include works for solo piano, a piece titled Patterned Ground for choir and electronics, and Breaking The Surface, for string orchestra. Guest artist Jon Goddard adds his guitar to the mix on Into Silence.

At the No. 10 spot, the classical superstar trio of Joshua Bell, Jeremy Denk, and Steven Isserlis rise up from No. 13 last week with their release Mendelssohn Piano Trios. The three artists, pianist Denk, violinist Bell, and cellist Isserlis, have been collaborating for decades; their 2016 album For the Love of Brahms, was highly acclaimed.

Mendelssohn’s music spans the range of classical elements and a romantic sense of drama and emotion. The trio have a shared love of Mendelssohn, and perform his Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 49 (1839) and No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 66 (1845).
