Piano Lunaire: High Summer Haydn 2024 Festival Finale
Sunday, September 8, 3 p.m.
Arts & Letters Club, 14 Elm St. $25
Pianist/composer Adam Sherkin kept himself busy this summer, curating and presenting three programs built on Haydn’s keyboard sonatas in NYC, and this fourth concert — the finale — will feature music of Haydn, George Benjamin, Richard Rodney Bennett, Edmund Rubbra, Lennox Berkeley, and Sherkin’s own sonatina. Haydn often gets shafted in music history, simply considered the ‘nice’ grandpa (with the exception of the string quartets); his works are often discussed as transitional developmental material of the classical style, rather than serious artistic works of their own. Sherkin digging out Haydn and aligning him with contemporary works is a welcoming sight, to illustrate how Haydn’s finer writing has inspired musicians, even in the 20th century. Stephen Runge (piano), Chantelle Grant (mezzo soprano), and Ivan Ivanovich (viola), will join Sherkin. Info here.
