Hope Muir, Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, has announced the appointment of Alyssa Martin as Artistic Producer of Creative Action. That appointment has been in effect since August 14.

“A multi-faceted, innovative creator, Alyssa is a uniquely talented choreographer and generous mentor deeply connected to Toronto’s dance community. I am thrilled that through this new role, Alyssa will bring her creative energy and community building skills to expanding our successful Creative Action programme,” said Muir in a statement.

Creative Action

The Creative Action programme, created in 2019, focuses on three main themes: Open Space, Micro-Commissions and the Choreographic Workshop. Through those core activities, Martin will oversee has the development of Canadian choreographic talent, along with sharing the NBC’s resources with the larger dance community in this country.

The role was created by Artistic Director Emerita Karen Kain and Robert Binet.

  • Open Space provides more than 2,000 hours of free studio space each season at The Walter Carsen Centre for independent choreographers.
  • The Choreographic Workshop allows independent choreographers the opportunity to develop their works with the NBC’s artists, music and production staff.
  • Micro-Commissions are small scale, innovative works, and the National Ballet will commission three each season.

Alyssa Martin

Choreographer Alyssa Martin recently created her first dance work for the National Ballet of Canada, the well received Desperate Drama of Red.

Alyssa Martin is a Toronto-based dance artist and teacher whose work has been performed across North America. She founded Rock Bottom Movement, a company dedicated to absurdist dance, in 2012 after earning her BFA Honours in Dance from the Toronto Metropolitan University Theatre School, and subsequent training in Montreal, New York, and Berlin.

She is an advocate for new dance works, and prior to this appointment, worked with The National Ballet of Canada as Associate, Artist Development Programmes under the mentorship of Robert Binet.

Alyssa has worked in the realms of television, theatre, and musical theatre along with dance per se, including four seasons working at the Stratford Festival.

Martin is taking over the role of Artistic Producer of Creative Action after the departure of Robert Binet, who has taken on the role of Artistic Director of Fall for Dance North.
