The Eastman School of Music has announced the appointment of Joseph Johnson to the position of Associate Professor of Cello. Johnson, who has been Principal Cellist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 2009, is also an alumnus of Eastman.
In a statement, Joseph said he is, “thrilled to be joining the faculty of the Eastman School of Music. This is a full-circle moment for me. As an alum of Eastman, this school holds a special place in my heart, and I am honoured to be returning ‘home’ to where my career started.”
Cellist Joseph Johnson
After graduating from the Eastman School of Music, Joseph earned his master’s degree from Northwestern University. Joseph Johnson was a member of the Minnesota Orchestra cello section for 11 years. Prior coming to Toronto, Joseph was Principal cellist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
Along with his position with the TSO, Johnson holds a similar position with the Santa Fe Opera. He is Assistant Professor of Cello at the University of Toronto. He is also a busy guest instructor at other music institutions, and a frequent performer at music festivals throughout North America. He recently performed the Canadian Première of the Unsuk Chin Cello Concerto with Esprit Orchestra.
Joseph performs on a cello crafted by master Paolo Castello in Genoa in 1780.
He performs Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No. 4, Op. 102 with pianist Saeyoon Chon at Koerner Hall
Along with teaching as an Assistant Professor of Cello at the University of Toronto, he serves as the cello coach for the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, FL.
This summer, he’ll be one of the mentors working with amateur musicians in Toronto Summer Music’s Community Program. In September 2024, he’ll be performing the Beethoven Triple Concerto with the TSO and fellow soloists Jonathan Crow and Jan Lisiecki.
