THE SCOOP | The 44th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards Celebration Takes Place June 24

By Anya Wassenberg on March 27, 2024

Toronto theatre and performing arts awards

Ryan G. Hinds will host the 44th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards Celebration that takes place Monday, June 24 at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre. The announcement was made today by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA).

The Dora Mavor Moore Awards are gender inclusive, and showcase the best of Toronto’s professional theatre, dance, and opera productions. The Doras will give out awards in 46 categories, and across 7 distinct divisions.

“The 44th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards promise to be the most impressive yet, brimming with razzle and dazzle,” said Jacoba Knaapen, Dora Awards Producer and TAPA Executive Director in a statement. “The Dora Awards serve as a cornerstone of Canada’s live theatre, dance, and opera scene, recognizing the most prestigious and innovative productions and honouring the highest achievements in Toronto’s performing arts community. It is with great excitement that we look forward to once again celebrating, inspiring, and entertaining the best and brightest in the industry.”

The Doras: Details

The Doras are Canada’s oldest and largest awards program, named after Dora Mavor Moore (1888-1979), a beloved teacher and director who played a pivotal role in establishing Canadian theatre in the 1930s and 1940s.

The 2024 Dora Awards will include one new award category: Outstanding Innovative Experience. This category was created to recognize a production or theatrical artform that is not eligible to register for any existing Dora Awards, Canadian Screen Awards, or Canadian Comedy Awards categories. It may include, but isn’t limited to, digital offerings, immersive shows, augmented reality, and other experimental or alternative theatrical and performance models.

This year’s details:

  • The cut-off date for eligibility in the 2023-2024 season is Sunday, May 12, 2024;
  • Productions must meet all eligibility requirements, with a minimum of 60% of juror-eligible performances to be presented prior to May 12.

Nominations for the 2024 Dora Awards will be announced on Tuesday, May 28 at 10:00 a.m. ET at Meridian Hall.

The Awards gala will be directed by Herbie Barnes, the Artistic Director of Young People’s Theatre. Diane Flacks returns for her eighth year as the scriptwriter, and lighting designer Andrea Lundy comes back for her 20th consecutive year.

Host Ryan G. Hinds

Ryan G. Hinds wears many hats, including actor, singer, dancer, writer, and on-stage personality. He has performed across North America, and is a fixture in Toronto’s theatre scene. Ryan has starred in many shows, and was the first Black actor to play Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch (he also appears in the 2001 movie). On stage, he’s performed with artists like Liza Minnelli, Debbie Reynolds, and many more.

Ryan is Associate Artist at lemonTree creations, and has appeared at Stratford Festival, Canadian Stage Company, and Buddies in Bad Times productions, among many others. This fall, he’ll be making his directorial debut at the Shaw Festival for its A Christmas Carol production in November.

Tickets to the 44th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards will go on sale on Tuesday, May 28 at 11:00 a.m. ET.
