At Ludwig-Van Toronto, we’re keenly aware of the importance of good arts writing, and we’d like to help out the next generation of writers. We’re looking for two emerging arts and culture writers with an interest in Western classical music for a freelance mentorship opportunity.

Here’s more about the opportunity, and how to apply.

What do you mean by ‘freelance mentorship opportunity’?

Essentially, you’d work on freelance assignments under the guidance of experienced writers and editors, at no cost to you. For a three month period, you would:

  • Work with an experienced writer and/or editor, a different one each month, including an information session and guidance via email contact after that;
  • The first two months would focus on reviews, so you’d attend concerts or events and write about them;
  • The final month would focus on a feature story of your choice, which may involve interviews and/or research of different kinds.

Stories submitted of professional quality (after coaching and editing) will be published, and you will be paid the usual freelance rate – that works out to one paid story per month x 3 to add to your portfolio.

What about you?

You will be:

  • Age 18 or older;
  • Have some interest in Western classical music;
  • Able to attend events in Toronto and/or area;
  • No professional writing experience is required.

How do I apply?

  • Send an email to Anya@ludwig-van.com with the subject line: Freelance Mentorship Opportunity.
  • In it, tell us briefly about your writing ambitions, and what you’d like to pursue or explore in this field in the future.
  • Please include a writing sample of 500 words, which may be previously published work, or not. Please choose a piece of writing that is descriptive, and if it talks about music of any kind, bonus points.
  • Deadline: February 4, 2024 11:59 p.m.

Good luck to all who are interested! We look forward to working with the next generation of arts writers.
