The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) announced that the institution’s signature orchestra, made up of students at The Glenn Gould School, will debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall on May 7, 2024.
The Glenn Gould School is a post-secondary professional training school for musicians, and the Royal Conservatory Orchestra, part of the Temerty Orchestral Program, is made up of its top students. The May 2024 performance, the Orchestra’s premiere international engagement, will take place on the Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage.
“With its rich cultural history, Carnegie Hall is held in high esteem as a pinnacle of artistic presentation and remarkable music. Bringing musicians from The Glenn Gould School to this revered concert hall has been planned since the school was founded in 1997,” said Dr. Peter Simon, President & CEO of The Royal Conservatory in a statement.
“The Royal Conservatory Orchestra is superb, and one of the finest student orchestras in the world,” continued Dr. Simon. “They deserve to be heard outside of our nation and this will be a very proud moment for Canada, this city, and this institution.”
The Glenn Gould School’s Royal Conservatory Orchestra (RCO) is a premiere level training orchestra whose alumni now perform with many of the world’s orchestras.
“This marks the first time in The Royal Conservatory’s over 135-year history, and The Glenn Gould School’s 25-year history, that our students will take to the stage at Carnegie Hall — it’s tremendously exciting, and a testament to the extremely high standard of excellence of our artists,” said James Anagnoson, Dean of The Glenn Gould School.
The program will also include conductor Peter Oundjian, an RCM honorary fellow, and RCM Artist in Residence Stewart Goodyear. They will perform pieces by Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy, along with Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky.
“I have witnessed first-hand the incredible talent and tenacity of the students of the Royal Conservatory Orchestra, and I have the utmost confidence they will rise to this extraordinary occasion with a performance of the highest calibre,” said Maestro Oundjian. “It will be a wonderful moment of national significance, to have the work of a contemporary Canadian female composer, inspired by one of Canada’s beloved artists, Glenn Gould, brought to life on stage in the beautiful Stern Auditorium.”
Carnegie Hall opened in 1891, and is noted for its acoustics along with a rich history of playing host to the world’s premiere artists.
