THE SCOOP | Tafelmusik Recalls Fan Favourites For 2022–23 Season

By Michael Vincent on April 29, 2022

After years of on-again-off-again concerts amid the pandemic upheaval, we’ve been picking up on a feeling around the classical music community these days. Classical music is coming back!

This week, Tafelmusik has joined the chorus of renewed optimism with one of the strongest season artist line-ups we’ve seen in years.

“After more than two years of filming concerts for online broadcast, we are looking forward to reuniting with our audience and reigniting the power of live music,” said Executive Director Carol Kehoe.

2022/23 Season Highlights:

  • Bach St John Passion, a large-scale choral masterpiece with contemporary projections
  • The long-awaited return of Tafelmusik’s Handel Messiah performances
  • Tafelmusik premiere of Louise Farrenc’s Nonet (1849)
  • Music by contemporary composers, including Short Story by Allen Whear and a new choral commission by Tawnie Olsen
  • The return of the Digital Series Pass, featuring three exclusive digital concert films: Handel Messiah, Bach Brandenburg Concertos, and La Passione: Handel & Mozart (available as an addition to live-concert subscriptions)
  • Tafelmusik is proud to continue its partnership with Opera Atelier this season. Details on Opera Atelier’s 2022/23 season are coming May 3 at operaatelier.com.

New voices

Artists making their Tafelmusik debuts next season include Soprano Myriam Leblanc, male soprano Samuel Mariño, countertenor Christopher Lowrey, and tenor Valerio Contaldo.

Harpsichordists and guest directors Francesco Corti and Avi Stein will also be making their debuts.

A blast from the past

…Fan favourites include special appearances by Jonathon Adams, Karina Gauvin, Samuel Mariño, Aisslinn Nosky, and Rachel Podger.

Three concerts we’re looking forward to most

Former Tafelmusik violinist Aisslinn Nosky returns to Toronto to lead the orchestra in large-scale chamber works from the romantic period. It’s been ages since she’s performed with Tafelmusik, and we can’t wait to see her again on October 28-29, 2022.

This holiday, Ivars Taurins returns to lead the Orchestra, Chamber Choir, and a cast of soloists for Handel’s Messiah in the pristine acoustics of Koerner Hall, December 16-17, 2022. Soloists include Karina Gauvin, Christopher Lowrey, Valerio Contaldo, and Brett Polegato.

Rising male soprano Samuel Mariño made big waves with his extraordinary debut album Care pupille in 2020. Mariño will be in Toronto to join the orchestra to sing virtuoso baroque opera arias from Handel’s Armino and Vivaldi’s Il Giustino, among others, from April 21–22, 2023.

Full-season live concert subscriptions and advance purchases of Handel Messiah and the Digital Series Pass for subscribers are now available at tafelmusik.org. All performances take place at Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre unless noted otherwise.
