Conductor Earl Lee has been named the 2022 recipient of The Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award.
Readers might remember Earl Lee as the former Resident Conductor of the Toronto Symphony between 2015 and 2018. Since then, he has gone on to guest conduct orchestras worldwide. This season, Lee made his debut with both the New York Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony.
The Solti is a big one!
As one of the fathers of modern conducting, Sir Georg Solti pulled deeply felt emotions from works by Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Richard Strauss, and Mahler. This significance makes winning an award from the Solti foundation that much sweeter.
The award is given annually to a single promising American conductor 38 years of age or younger. It is the largest grant currently given to American conductors in the formative years of their careers.
The prize includes $30,000 as well as career guidance and industry connections.
Past recipients include Gemma New, Aram Demirjian, Yaniv Dinur, Roderick Cox, Christopher Allen, Karina Canellakis, Vladimir Kulenovic, Cristian Macelaru, James Feddeck, Case Scaglione, Eric Nielsen, and Anthony Barrese.
“Having kept an eye on his career for several years, we are pleased to announce Earl Lee as this year’s recipient of The Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award,” said Foundation Board Chair Penny Van Horn.

- Earl Lee currently serves as Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
- He is a regular guest conductor with the orchestras of North America’s top music schools, including Manhattan School of Music and the New England Conservatory.
- A trained cellist, Lee holds degrees in cello from the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music.
- Previous posts include Resident Conductor, Toronto Symphony (2015 – 2018) and Music Director, Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (2001 – 2003).
