Canadian conducting legend Boris Brott has passed away at the age of 78.

Early reports are stating that he was hit by a car while out walking this morning in Hamilton, Ontario.

According to the Hamilton police, someone called 911 after 10 a.m. to report a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road on Hamilton Mountain.

Shortly after, paramedics were called to assist a man who had been hit at the intersection of Park Avenue South and Markland Street in lower Hamilton. He was found in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The driver fled the scene. The 33-year-old male driver was later captured after an altercation with Hamilton police.

The matter is now being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

Tributes are currently pouring into social media via Brott Music Festival and Orchestre Classique de Montréal.

Brott leaves behind his wife, Ardyth Webster Brott, and three children.
