Canadian piano dynamo Bruce Liu has signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon to honour World Piano Day.
The news marks an incredible year for the young pianist who swept first place at the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition. He was the first Canadian ever to win the competition.
Deutsche Grammophon has already released an album of Bruce Liu’s performances from various stages of the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition.
Gramophone called it “one of the most distinguished Chopin recitals of recent years, full of maturity, character and purpose”.
The label plans to release a series of e-singles starting April 1, with more to come throughout 2022. The pianist will also be working on two new albums: one on Liu’s connection to France with works by Chopin and Rameau. The second will feature Tchaikovsky’s Concerto No. 2.
Something in the water, eh?
Liu joins fellow Canadians Emily D’Angelo, Jan Lisiecki and Yannick Nézet-Séguin in marquee releases at the so-called yellow label. Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon described Canada as “a hotbed of musical talent”.
