Harbourfront Centre has appointed Denise Bolduc as their inaugural Director of Indigenous Arts.

As an Artistic director and producer, Bolduc is known for creating shows that challenge viewers’ preconceptions and spark new ways of thinking.

She has collaborated with a wide range of artists and organizations…

  • Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the Aboriginal Music Project at Harbourfront Centre
  • Arts Program Officer for the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council
  • Headed programs for Luminato, REEL Canada and others
  • First started working with Harbourfront Centre as Artistic Director of the inaugural Planet IndigenUS in 2004

Bolduc currently serves as a faculty member with the Centre for Indigenous Theatre and continues as a mentor. She is also on the board and council for Coach House Books’ Non-Fiction Indigenous Editorial Committee, Indigenous Music Office’s Working Group, OCADU Indigenous Education Council, BIBU Festival Advisory, and Forbes Wild Foods Inc.

“I am truly looking forward to exploring, transforming and collaborating with the local and international community, partners and everyone at Harbourfront Centre, focusing on interweaving and amplifying Indigenous voices, relations and worldviews,” she said in a statement.

Bolduc will serve as a consultant for the Harbourfront’s programming departments to advance and promote indigenous artists and educators and launch new indigenous arts and culture initiatives.

Why this matters:

Strengthening Indigenous creative and leadership capacity within the arts has been identified as a significant growth area for arts organizations in Canada.

Besides the Harbourfront Centre news, the Banff Centre just appointed a new Director of Indigenous Leadership. The National Arts Centre has also been launching new initiatives. The Ontario Arts Council launched a $4M fund for Indigenous artists and organizations at the funding level.
