The National Ballet of Canada has announced Principal Dancer Skylar Campbell will be leaving to join Houston Ballet as a Principal Dancer in January 2022.

Campbell joined the National Ballet in 2009. He was promoted to principal dancer in 2018.

Notable career highlights include the title role in Will Tuckett’s Pinocchio, Nijinsky, Le Petit Prince and The Nutcracker, Mercutio and Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet, Hilarion in Giselle, Alain in La Fille malgardée, Gurn in La Sylphide, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

“This is a bittersweet goodbye,” said Campbell. “The National Ballet of Canada has been my artistic home for 12 years. I will forever carry beautiful memories shared on and off the stage alongside my inspirational colleagues at the company. The National Ballet has provided me with many fantastic opportunities, and I am looking forward to this next chapter in my career with Houston Ballet.”

Quick Math

It’s been a busy season for principal dancers at the National Ballet. With principal dancers, Jillian Vanstone and Sonia Rodriguez, Elena Lobonova, Hannah Fischer, and now Campbell either departing or retiring, this makes five dancers leaving the National Ballet this season. This past June, artistic director Karen Kain also stepped down.

Despite the exits, four dancers have been promoted to principals this season.
