The National Ballet of Canada will be bringing The Nutcracker back to the stage for live performances. Shows will be at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto from December 10 – 31, 2021.

The National ballet cancelled The Nutcracker in August 2020, marking the first time since 1955 the production was cancelled.

What they’re saying

“I am thrilled the magic will return this year, with some adaptations to ensure the safety of our artists and audiences, said Barry Hughson, Executive Director of The National Ballet of Canada. “The National Ballet of Canada is fully committed to a safe return and will adhere to, or surpass, all government requirements including proof of vaccination and capacity limits. All of us at the National Ballet are so looking forward to finally welcoming audiences back to the theatre.”

What’s Different: Performers

  • Due to provincial health protocols, there will be no performers from outside the National Ballet.
  • All the children’s roles will be performed by students of Canada’s National Ballet School.
  • There will be no children under the age of 12 in the production, and all performers and crew will be fully vaccinated.
  • Celebrity guests will not be permitted to guest star as Cannon Dolls.

What’s Different: Audiences

  • All patrons over 12 will be required to show proof of vaccination along with a government-issued ID.
  • Children under the age of 12 will be required to prove a negative rapid antigen or PCR COVID-19 test. A discount will be added to tickets for children under the age of 12 to offset the test cost.
  • The Province of Ontario’s Roadmap to Recovery stage 3 allows theatres in Ontario to operates at 50% capacity.
