THE SCOOP | The New England Conservatory Is About To Get A Big Boost In Enrollment

By Michael Vincent on September 7, 2021

Pianists Jonathan Biss and Marc-André Hamelin Join New England Conservatory Faculty

New England Conservatory has appointed renowned Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin and American pianist Jonathan Biss to the piano faculty for one-year appointments each.

The two towering pianists will join department chair Bruce Brubaker, and 50+ other pianists at the New England Conservatory (NEC) for the 2021 academic year.

“Jonathan and Marc-André are two of the towering pianists of our time, each of whom exemplifies the cross-section of extraordinary technical skill and probing, insightful artistry,” says Benjamin Sosland, Provost and Dean of Faculty, New England Conservatory of Music. “It is an exceptional honour to welcome them to our community, where they will inspire our students and build on NEC’s legacy of pianistic excellence.”

One in three chance

With an acceptance rate of 33%, it is one of the more challenging music schools to get into.

The school serves 800 music students representing more than 40 countries, with an additional 2,000 youth and adults who study in the Preparatory and Continuing Education divisions.

The school is known for a 4:1 student to faculty ratio, as well as its dual degree program (Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) at Harvard College and a Master of Music (M.M.) at New England Conservatory.)
