It has been a season of transformation for Harbourfront Centre’s Summer Music in the Garden this year.

Announced this past March, long-time Artistic Director Tamara Bernstein stepped down after heading the series for 20 years.

After a short search, Harbourfront named Toronto-based pianist and new music specialist Gregory Oh as its new curator for the 2022 season.

“We are delighted to announce that Gregory Oh is the new Curator for Summer Music in the Garden, succeeding founding Artistic Director Tamara Bernstein,” said Harbourfront Centre’s Nathalie Bonjour in a press release. “Gregory is an acclaimed Toronto-based pianist, conductor and curator with a remarkably versatile career and a deep curiosity for music programming that is relevant to today’s audiences. We look forward to Gregory’s dynamic vision and our return to the Garden in summer 2022.”

It’s been a while since Harbourfront Centre effectively shut the Summer Music in the Garden concert series down for the 2021 season. Instead, they have been using the pandemic year to focus on commissioning new works for a return to in-person concerts in Summer 2022.

Good news for new music lovers

With Oh having a primary interest in contemporary music and some new commissions on the way, it looks like there will be more of an emphasis on new music in the gardens next summer.

“I feel like any resident of Toronto can hop on the streetcar, pedal the Martin Goodman, or stroll to the very bottom of Spadina and find things new or mysterious, or sometimes a potent reminder of another place they also call home,” said Oh. “In programming Summer Music in the Garden, I hope to continue in this tradition — to surprise, to discover, to remember who we were, examine who we are, and look forward to what we can become.”

Since opening in 2001, Harbourfront Centre’s Summer Music in the Garden has specialized in offering free concerts with a diverse mix of music traditions on Sunday and Thursday during the summer months.
