A recent poll conducted by Ipsos found that 60 percent of Canadians were in favour of using COVID-19 vaccine passports for indoor concerts.

While the vast majority were in support, opinions were somewhat divided across demographics.

Only 24 percent of respondents above age 55 were opposed to the use of vaccine passports versus 44 percent of those between 18-34.

Sean Simpson, vice president of Ipsos, stated that Canadians, paracellularly those vaccinated themselves, supported vaccine passports.

“Clearly, if you have a vaccine already in you, you’re going to be more supportive of a vaccine passport; that’s no skin off your back,” said Simpson during an interview with the Globe.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the Canadian Government is currently looking into using vaccine passports as part of a plan to open international travel amid the pandemic, but did not mention a plan to use them for events such as music concerts.

Big Picture

The European Union (EU) is exploring a system that uses Quick Response (QR) codes to reveal the vaccination status of individuals. Israel’s “green pass” program allows those vaccinated access to concert venues, and other indoor spaces such as gyms, restaurants and nightclubs.

While vaccine passports have been used in the (EU) and Israel, they have been criticized by those who see them as dystopian social credit systems that violate privacy and freedom of movement.

Canada’s privacy commissioner stated they would require strict guidelines to avoid “an encroachment on civil liberties that should be taken only after careful consideration.”
