Opera + Boxes = Opera Boxes?
Not exactly.
Tapestry Opera’s Box Concerts was first launched last summer when the full extent of the pandemic was still sinking in.
Tapestry Opera offered a curbside concert for hire. Just a phone call away, they’ll show up in a slightly bizarre, custom-made trailer that unfolds to provide the stage for a live and in-person tenor.
These pop-up performances are performed live, and free to access across Toronto.
Last year, they performed 74 concerts around the GTA. Fifty of them were for hospitals and care homes.
“We were overwhelmed with the magic Box Concerts brought to Toronto communities last year,” said Michael Mori. “This year we’re delighted to be relaunching the program with the goal of reaching twice as many people, bringing the collective experiences of beauty and joy to Torontonians suffering from over a year of isolation.”
Returning again this summer, Box Concerts, will premiere a new one-person show that mixes opera, musical theatre and songs to tell a story of connection and belonging.
- Tenor Asitha Tennekoon will be joining the team again as soloist.
- Includes composer Benton Roark and playwright Donna-Michelle St. Bernard.
We might not be able to sit beside each other to take in an opera just yet, but this is the next best thing.
Box Concerts runs June 16 – September 12, 2021.
Private bookings go on sale May 17, and care home bookings are on sale now.
