With the season prematurely cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Metropolitan Opera has announced that it will present At Home Gala, a live concert streamed online featuring some of the world’s biggest opera stars.
The concert will be streamed on April 25, 2020, at 1 p.m. ET via the Met Opera homepage. Listeners will be encouraged to donate using a link on the website using the performance.
The Details: Designed as a fundraiser, the concert will include 40+ artists performing from their homes and will include Renée Fleming, Diana Damrau, and Jonas Kaufmann. It will also include artists performing with their significant others living in social isolation: Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov; Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak; Terfel and Hannah Stone; Stephen and Yoon Kwon Costello; and Nicole Car and Etienne Dupuis.
“While the Met is famous for its high-definition transmissions into cinemas, this will be a great artistic but low-tech operation,” wrote Peter Gelb in a press release. “We will be providing operatic uplift to our audiences, as well as for our singers, who are eager to connect with their fans.”
It will also include Met music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin performing a piano transcription of the meditation from Massenet’s Thais from his home in Montreal.
Streaming for Dollars: The move is a swift pivot to help stem the $60M loss due to cancelled productions they depended on to maintain operation revenue.

The program will be hosted by Gelb from his home in New York, and directed by Gary Halvorson in Los Angeles.
