Film buffs might recognize the name of Hanns Eisler as the film composer of Hollywood classics, None But the Lonely Heart starring heart-throb Cary Grant, or Fritz Lang’s noir war, Hangman Also Die.
Classical music lovers might recognize him as one of the 20th century’s great lieder composers.
History buffs might recognize him as the prolific Hollywood film composer whose career was cut short by the infamous 1947 HUAC hearings, which resulted in deportation.
No matter how you know Hanns Eisler, he is decidedly one of the most fascinating composers of the 20th-century. Described as a “dramatized recital”, audiences will experience “a day in the life of Eisler, from his arrival in Hollywood to his death in East Germany using the songs of Hollywood Songbook to weave the story together.”
Internationally renowned baritone Russell Braun has teamed up with stage director Tim Albery to present Hell’s Fury, The Hollywood Songbook at the Luminato Festival with Soundstreams, and Pinkhouse Productions.
Hell’s Fury, The Hollywood Songbook runs June 19-23 at Harbourfront Centre Theatre. Tickets, here.
