COFFEE BREAK | The Gryphon Trio’s New Arvo Pärt Video Is The Perfect Way To Clear Out The Clutter

By Michael Vincent on January 23, 2019

It’s been a particularly wet and messy Wednesday in Toronto, so we’re all too happy to jump on the minimalist Tidying Up bandwagon ushered in by incomparable Marie Kondo on Netflix today.

We found what we think is the perfect musical representation of decluttering: a new video from CBC Music of The Gryphon Trio performing Arvo Pärt’s tidy masterwork “Spiegel im Spiegel”.

Penned in 1978, the piece was an example of Pärt’s tintinnabular style, which sought to strip the music to its bare essentials, leaving only a melodic line floating atop arpeggiated triads that hold the whole ten minutes up like a pile of zen rocks.

And who better to demonstrate this cleanse than cellist Roman Borys and pianist James Parker: two impeccable music stoics from The Gryphon Trio.

Purge… and choose joy.
