THE SCOOP | Rocking Horse Winner Dominates 2017 Dora Awards

At last night’s 38th-annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards at Elgin Theatre, it was Tapestry Opera’s time to shine with a total of five awards in the Opera division, including Outstanding Direction to Michael Mori.

Hosted by actor and musician Raoul Bhaneja, a total of 129 arts companies and 210 productions competed for 50 awards, including the Silver Ticket Award and the newly-named Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award in honour of the late theatre critic Jon Kaplan.

Tapestry Opera‘s Rocking Horse Winner was the clear favourite, winning Outstanding Production, Outstanding Direction (Michael Mori), Outstanding Male Performance (Asitha Tennekoon), Outstanding Performance Ensemble and Outstanding Lighting Design (Michelle Ramsay).

Not far behind was the Toronto powerhouse Canadian Opera Company who took home three awards for Norma: Outstanding Female Performance (Sondra Radvanovsky), Outstanding Scenic Design (David Korins), and Outstanding Costume Design (Jessica Jahn). They also won a well-deserved Outstanding Musical Direction (Johannes Debus) for Wagner’s Götterdämmerung.

Musical Theatre had some strong competition this year, but it was Mirvish Productions and Yonge Street Theatricals’ Come From Away that impressed the judges most with the coveted Outstanding Production award. Bad Hats Theatre also did well with three awards for Peter Pan, including Outstanding Production in the Theatre for Young Audiences division.

In the General Theatre category, Soulpepper Theatre again led the pack with five awards. The Last Wife garnered Outstanding Female Performance (Maev Beaty) and Outstanding Scenic Design (Yannik Larivée), Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts I, II, III) won Outstanding Production, Incident at Vichy won Outstanding Ensemble Performance, and A Doll’s House won Outstanding Costume Design (Victoria Wallace).

The Independent Theatre Division was an even split with two awards each for Ahuri Theatre/The Theatre Centre, The Company Theatre, and Crow’s Theatre.

The most awards of the night went to The Theatre Centre across two divisions in the Dance and Independent Theatre for a total of six Doras. what it’s like won Outstanding Production, Outstanding Ensemble Performance and Outstanding Lighting Design (Simon Rossiter).

DanceWorks were awarded two statues for Outstanding Original Choreography for Ylem (Lina Cruz) for 3 Eggs Ago and Outstanding Female Performance (Jennifer Dallas) for Kittly-Bender.

The Outstanding Touring Production went to Robert LePage’s 887 by Canadian Stage.

The SilverTicket Award was presented to longtime arts manager Jane Marsland, for her over fifty years of service to the theatre arts community in Toronto.

The Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Production — an award chosen by the public online — was for Come From Away, produced by Mirvish Productions and Yonge Street Theatricals.
