Formally announced in a press release early this morning, John Miller, Founder and Artistic Producer of the Stratford Summer Music Festival (SSM), will be stepping down effective 2019.

Next summer will be Miller’s last active season, and will run from July 16 to August 26, 2018.

“When we lunched at the Gardiner Museum recently you asked me about this very matter,” Miller wrote in an email to Ludwig Van. “ I promised to let you know if/when a time came […] The ‘Miller era’ at Stratford sees a horizon ahead.  I’ve concluded a three-year turnover agreement with the Stratford Summer Music board.”

“The deed is done, the dotted lines signed…”

The search for a successor will begin in the fall, and will be led by SSM Board member, Mary Hofstetter, a former President & CEO of the Banff Centre. The path moving forward will have Miller staying on for the 2018 season and then, for two succeeding years, acting as a close advisor to the incoming Artistic Director for the 2019 and 2020 festival seasons.

“Obviously, there will be plenty of great music this summer and, I hope, next July/August while I’m still actively in the leadership chair,” Miller said in a statement. “Ultimately I trust that this timing and planning are what’s best for S.S.Music because the entire organisation seems to me to be at a point of strength… a good time to pass along the baton to a successor who begins in 2019.”

In honour of Miller achievement as the founder of what has become one of Canada’s most important multi-genre music festivals, he will be made Founder & Artistic Director Emeritus.

“Simply put, there wouldn’t be a Stratford Summer Music without John,” said Marcel van Hulle, Chair of the Stratford Summer Music Board in a press release statement. “We recognise and greatly appreciate his outstanding achievements in building the scope and reputation of this entire organisation. During 2018 we plan to celebrate his leadership over the years and his legacy as our Founding Artistic Producer.”

This marks an end of an era, yet a new and exciting chapter for both Miller and the SSM.

The 2017 Stratford Summer Music season, will launch on Monday, July 17 and run through Sunday, August 27. Tickets are now on sale now and moving fast. See here for full event details and tickets.
