Rockport Music has announced musician, educator and administrator Barry Shiffman as the new Artistic Director, effective September 2017.
Shiffman will succeed current Artistic Director, David Deveau, who has led Rockport Music since 1995. Until that time, Shiffman will begin planning the 2018 Rockport Music Chamber Music Festival under the title of Artistic Director Designate.
“I am overwhelmed with excitement at this new position,” Shiffman said. “The Hall in Rockport is truly extraordinary, and the board is exceptionally motivated.”
Founded in 1981, Rockport Music presents over 20 classical, jazz, folk, pop, and world music performances annually, and recently completed construction of the Shalin Liu Performance Center. The concert hall provides them with a permanent home and serves the greater Boston area.
“Great performances need three things, all of which are in abundance at Rockport Music, exceptional musicians, curious listeners and a glorious sounding concert hall,” Shiffman said. “The momentum and growth that Rockport Music has shown since its move to the Shalin Liu Performance Center is inspiring.”
Shiffman’s appointment adds to a surprisingly full administrative plate. These include Executive Director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, Associate Dean and Director of Chamber Music at the Glenn Gould School, Dean of the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and Executive Artistic Director of Music in the Morning Concert Society.
To help make room for his new role at Rockport, Shiffman said he will be resigning his position at Music in the Morning in Vancouver at the end of June.
Shiffman will maintain his residence in Canada, but will be in-residence in Rockport during the Rockport Chamber Music Festival.
