During a weekend concert by the National Youth Orchestra Canada (NYO Canada) at the Maison Symphonique in Montreal, The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage took to the stage to announce an award of $525,000 for the National Youth Orchestra Canada’s pan-Canadian signature initiative, Edges of Canada Sesquicentennial Concert Tour.

Established in April 2015, the funds are part of the $210 million Canada 150 Fund created to cover costs by arts group to participate in Canada’s 150 birthday celebrations across Canada in 2017.

Prepare to be dazzled by the talent of our young musicians,” The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage said.

NYO Canada will use the funds to travel to several Norther communities for concerts incorporating collaborations with local Indigenous artists. They will also include mentoring and outreach for aspiring young musicians in each of the communities.

Executive Director, National Youth Orchestra Canada Barbara Smith, was thankful for the support and said the funds would enable them to perform in places we’ve never been to before. “We will give Canadians a very special cultural experience and get a conversation going, building on the transformative power of the arts.”

The NYO Canada join the likes of The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, who were awarded an unprecedented $7.5 million last March to fund Canada 150 events which will include new commissions by Canadian composers.
