New York’s Metropolitan Opera (MET) has announced that longtime Music Director James Levine will retire at the end of the season in April.

In a statement released today, the MET stated Levine’s ongoing heath struggles have become too severe to allow him to continue in his role as Music Director, a post he has held since 1976. Levine will continue as the head of the MET’s Young Artist Development Program, and will conduct two final concerts in May at Carnegie Hall.
