The vision for a lending library of the twenty-first century has become much more than traditional books, DVDs and magazines. There’s now a library for construction tools, kitchen supplies, and even a library for gardeners. It makes you wonder why a library for lending musical instruments has taken so long.

The Parkdale Library branch in Toronto has opened up the doors to their new instrument library (now totaling over 100 instruments), to anyone equipped with a trusted library card.

Available instruments include classical and acoustic guitars, ukuleles, bass guitars, banjos, mandolins, xylophones, cajons, doumbeks, various percussion instruments, as well as violins, and electronic keyboards.

The program was made possible by Sun Life Financial, who first inquired about the possibility of setting up a musical instrument lending library a few years ago.

“When you take a look at the direction the public libraries are going in, it makes perfect sense,” said Ana-Maria Critchley, Manager of Stakeholder Relations with the Toronto Public Library in a statement. “Libraries are about connecting people to opportunities and breaking down barriers to access.”

The Parkdale Library is currently accepting donations of used and new musical instruments at the Parkdale branch and Long and McQuade music stores from Thursday, April 7 to Saturday, May 7th.

While all instruments are welcome, they are particularly in need of more string instruments, including violas, cellos, and double basses.
