The Banff Centre has released details on the third season of the popular summer Opera training program Open Space: Opera in the 21st-Century.

The immersive performance-based program provides 15 young professionals the chance to collaborate on the creation of a new opera with Against the Grain Theatre artists and internationally recognized faculty. These include Canadian Opera Company General Director Alexander Neef, who will lead career development sessions, and vocal instruction by lyric baritone Russell Braun, soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, and music training by conductor Miloš Repický.

Participants will balance rehearsals, performance opportunities, and collaborative skill exchange between faculty and artists amidst the scenic town of Banff, Alberta.

This year the program will develop a new project conceived by Against the Grain Theatre’s artistic director Joel Ivany called “Mozart Murder Mystery: Three Weddings and a Funeral!” The work is described as a mashup of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro and Così fan tutte. This workshop production follows up on AtG’s previous “transladaptation which included Figaro’s Wedding, #UncleJohn and A Little Too Cozy.

The five-week residency will also include a new workshop production of Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia directed by Paul Curran. It will employ a cast of eight and an orchestra of 13 players.

The program offers space for only 13 singers, one assistant répétiteur, and one assistant director.

According to the website, applicants should have completed their post-secondary education.

An audition tour will take place between February 1-5, 2016 in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Singers and répétiteurs from the US may record a live audition in New York City, Boston, and Cleveland during The Banff Centre’s Chamber Music Residency auditions.  Assistant directors will be interviewed via Skype.

The application deadline is January 13, 2016.
