Announced today, Soundstreams’ impresario Chris Lorway will be leaving his two-year stint as the Executive Director of Soundstreams to begin as Director of Programming of Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall starting September 1, 2014.

Clearly his good work with the Luminato Festival and Soundstreams has not gone unnoticed. Does this mean we can expect to hear more contemporary music programming at Roy Thomson Hall in the years to come? We will have to wait and see.

Toronto, ON –Soundstreams today announced the departure of Executive Director Chris Lorway, as the Corporation of Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall revealed that he will join its executive team this fall as its Director of Programming. During his two-year tenure at Soundstreams, Lorway worked closely with Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney to strengthen Soundstreams’ position as one of the county’s leading contemporary music organizations.

Lorway was instrumental in implementing Soundstreams’ comprehensive digital platform, including a major redesign of the corporate website, the launch of the SoundMakers website and iPad app, and live streaming season concerts. He has reduced the company’s accumulated deficit by 30% while increasing the organization’s annual activities. He also pursued local and international collaborations–including the Spotlight Japan celebration with Canadian Stage, TIFF, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and Japan Foundation–and orchestrated a major tour of Canadian artists and music to Taiwan and mainland China last spring. More recently, he produced the world premiere of Brian Current and Anton Piatigorsky’s chamber opera Airline Icarus directed by Tim Albery.

Bernie Schiff, Soundstreams Board Chair, said: “Chris is a brilliant fiscal and operational manger. He came to Soundstreams at a critical time and transformed it into a professional and efficient organization where more gets done with less, with ever increasing excellence. He shepherded the company through a period of significant growth and leaves us better prepared than ever for the future.”

Effective September 1, 2014, Lorway will take on the role of Director of Programming with the Corporation of Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall where he will be responsible for programming two of Canada’s most prestigious concert halls.

“I am very proud of what the team at Soundstreams has achieved in such a short time” says Lorway. “We have strengthened the Soundstreams brand in the community and abroad, significantly increased private sector funding and have built a number of solid partnerships that will continue to yield dividends as the company moves forward.”

Lorway has been Executive Director of Soundstreams since 2012. He is also a management consultant whose clients have included the Edinburgh Festivals, Carnegie Hall, the City of Toronto and the City of Chicago. Prior to Soundstreams, Lorway spent five seasons as the founding Artistic Director of the Luminato Festival, where he shaped and implemented the festival’s artistic vision and program. Other companies he has worked with include AEA Consulting, the Lincoln Center Festival, the New Yorker Festival and the Celtic Colours International Festival.

The Soundstreams Board of Directors has developed a succession strategy around Lorway’s departure and has been speaking with a number of exciting candidates. An appointment will be made and announced within the coming weeks.
