It’s a busy week ahead for Musical Toronto, where we’ll be spending the next week in the heart of la vieille ville covering the Montreal International Music Competition (MIMC) finals.

The 6 finalists, who have just been announced, include 2 Canadians: Charles Richard-Hamelin and Xiaoyu Liu.

Here is the list of the finalists who will perform a concerto of their choice with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, conducted by Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero, at Maison symphonique on June 3 and 4:

The jury will begin deliberating after the final recital, on Wednesday, June 4, and will announce the prize winners shortly thereafter.

The international jury is composed of Mr. Michel Béroff (France), Mr. Daniel Blumenthal (United States), Mr. Hung-Kuan Chen (Taiwan), Mr. Abdel Rahman El Bacha (France/Lebanon), Ms. Janina Fialkowska (Canada), Ms. Blanca Uribe (Colombia), and Ms. Zhu Xiao-Mei (China).

We will also be covering a very special recital with Oliver Jones and the 14 year-old pianist Daniel Clarke Bouchard, on Monday June 2nd. The concert aptly called, An Exceptional Duo, will offer the audience a musical program reflecting the interests of both musicians, who will take turns performing classical and jazz pieces, bringing their two worlds together for a few numbers. Bassist Éric Lagacé and drummer Jim Doxas, two well-known musicians on the Montreal jazz scene, will also be part of the concert.

Looking forward to it!
