  • Baritone Russell Braun and pianist Carolyn Maule with Marie Bérard and artists of the COC Orchestra at Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Noon. Free admission.

Come get up-close and personal with COC Roberto Devereux principal Russell Braun and his wife Carolyn Maule, performing Barber’s emotional Dover Beach and Gabriel Fauré’s beautiful song cycle, La bonne chanson, Op. 61. What a perfect way to spend your lunch hour.  Details here.

One of the founding members of the junctQín Keyboard Collective will be dazzling with an amazing set of pieces inspired by water, including Southam, Dutilleux, Vincent Ho and Jordan Nobles. Lau will be performing Henri Dutilleux’s Au gré des ondes, which is worth the price of admission alone. Details here.

 

14 Wednesday

  • Toronto Symphony Orchestra with Michael Francis, conductor, Tom Allen, host. Roy Thomson Hall 6:30 p.m. $29-82

The TSO will present some German and British fare with Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony (No. 3) and Purcell’s lovely Dances from The Fairy Queen. Don’t worry if you can’t fit in dinner, they will be serving complimentary hors d’oeuvres before the show. Details here.

On the 15th, the concert repeats with a special matinée performance starting at 2 p.m. The programme will also include Alberto Ginastera’s Harp Concerto, performed by TSO Principal Harpist Heidi Van Hoesen Gorton as soloist. Show also repeats on the Saturday the 17th at 8 p.m.

  • Artists of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and Ensemble Studio at Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Noon. Free admission

As part of the COC chamber music series, the über talented soprano Sasha Djihanian and COC orchestra members will perform some Handel and Albinoni. Djihanian will sing two arias from Handel’s Giulio Cesare – ‘Da tempeste’ and ‘Piangero’, plus ‘Moriro, ma vendicata’. Orchestra members include violinists Liz Johnson and Paul Zevenhuizen, violist Keith Hamm and Brandon Chui, cellist Alastair Eng and harpsichordist Paul Jenkins. As always make sure to arrive early.   • Thin Edge New Music Collective with Jason Doell and Germaine Liu at the Music Gallery. 8:00 p.m. $8-12

The Music Gallery’s ever popular Emergents series closes tonight with Toronto composers Jason Doell and Germaine Liu teaming up with the Thin Edge New Music Collective. They will be exploring electronics, Persian music and improvisations in what they call a Post-genre meltdown! The event is curated by Nick Storring. Details here.

  • Group of 27 at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre. 8 p.m. Pay-what-you-can

Toronto’s all-star classical band returns with a programme of Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. But tonight is a little different: the audience will get to choose each movement the orchestra plays using on the spot voting with smart-phones, clapping and hand-raising. The concert will conclude with a rousing rendition of Beethoven’s Symphony number 7. Sounds like a lot of fun. Details here.

  • I FURIOSI at Windermere United Church. 8 p.m. $10-20

The fiery I FURIOSI baroque ensemble brings a program titled Orphans & Orphanages: A Musical History, from the girls of the Pieta, through Oliver Twist and Harry Potter. “Please Sir, I Want Some More” – indeed! Guests include Marco Cera, oboe and guitar; Lucas Harris, lute and theorbo. Not to be missed. Details.

 

18 Sunday

  • Ton Beau String Quartet at Gallery 345. 3 p.m. $10-20

This afternoon the Ton Beau String Quartet will perform an interesting mix including Mendelssohn’s String Quartet Op.13 and Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht. Looks like a great way to spend an afternoon. Info at Gallery 345.
