Toronto Symphony Orchestra | Tchaikovsky + Brahms

One of the foremost violinists of his generation, Frank Peter Zimmermann performs Brahms’s spellbinding Violin Concerto in a virtuosic display of soaring cadenzas and lyrical, intimate dialogue with the Orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, performed side by side with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, takes on an alternatively menacing theme–surrendering to Fate. His tumultuous personal life, resulting breakdown, and composer’s block are all reflected in the movements, from sweet yearning, to despair, to the crashing inescapability of one’s destiny. Adding to the excitement are two World Premières commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from NexGen Composers Julia Mermelstein and Christina Volpini.
