Bela Bartók’s delightfully effervescent Divertimento for String Orchestra was composed in just 15 days. Its playful folk rhythms brought a brief respite of tranquility shortly before the Hungarian-born composer fled Fascist Europe for the US. Mozart’s popular “Prague” Symphony was composed as an ode to the city while The Marriage of Figaro was being fêted there. The World première of a work by Métis composer Ian Cusson, created in partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), rounds out the program.
