The stylus fantasticus (“fantastic style”) was all the rage in the 17th century: instrumental music written in a bold, unrestrained, and extravagant manner. The performers were urged to embrace an unbridled style of playing, virtuosic and spontaneous.
This audacious style had its origins in Venice and Rome, but quickly travelled north. Our concert includes music written in Austria, Italy, and Germany. As spring gives way to summer, be sure to join us on this musical journey into the fascinating world of the “fantasticus.”
Program includes
17th-century sonatas by Marini, Bertali, Fontana, Schmelzer, Castello, Kerll, and Kapsberger.
Listen to Bertali’s Sonata a 3 performed by Quicksilver
