The Royal Conservatory of Music | Staatskapelle Berlin with Daniel Barenboim
November 25, 2023 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
With almost 450 years of tradition, Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the oldest orchestras in the world. Founded as a court orchestra by Prince-Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg in 1570, the ensemble expanded its activities with the founding of the Royal Court Opera in 1742 by Frederick the Great. Maestro Daniel Barenboim has served as the orchestra’s General Music Director since 1992 and, in 2000, the orchestra voted him as Conductor for Life.
“Daniel Barenboim is one of the few musicians in the world today who could accurately be described as legendary.” (The Times) As a pianist and conductor, Barenboim has been active for decades in major cities across Europe and all around the world. As the founder of several orchestras and the initiator of numerous highly acclaimed projects, he has contributed decisively to international music life.
In both the opera and the concert repertoire, Maestro Barenboim and the Staatskapelle have jointly worked on large-scale cycles and presented them in Berlin and on worldwide guest performance tours. The cyclical production of Richard Wagner’s 10 major works at Berlin’s Staatsoper met with international acclaim, as did the performance of all symphonies by Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, and Bruckner.
For the orchestra’s first ever Toronto appearances, they will play all four of Johannes Brahms’s symphonies over two concerts.
