Scheherazade tells the tale of an Arabian King who seeks revenge on all women for the betrayal and infidelity of his wife. One day he meets the young and beautiful Scheherazade. She is determined to win him over by telling him a different bedtime story every night ending with “I will finish it tomorrow” thus sparing her life another day. The King falls in love with her and makes her his Queen.
Rimsky-Korsakov was inspired to write this work from 1001 Arabian nights.
Maestro Alain Trudel and the National Academy Orchestra also perform Ichmouratov’s The Bewitched Canoe, a popular French-Canadian tale of coureurs des bois who make a deal with the devil.
Kerson Leong is one of Canada’s greatest violinists. He performs Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.
