Apocryphonia | Amor Con Fortuna: Songs of 16th Century Spain
October 15 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
PWYCApocryphonia’s second concert of the season, and Diapente’s season opening concert, Amor con Fortuna features the musical genres that flourished in the Kingdoms of Spain during the 16th century.
As the madrigal exploded in popularity as a vocal genre in Italy, composers from the Iberian peninsula drew upon aspects of this new sensation and of Iberian styles in the development of the genres the villancico (which survives today in the context of Spanish language Christmas carols) and the ensalada.
Alongside the vihuela, the distinctly Spanish equivalent of the lute, and Castilian and Catalan poetry, composers and vihuelists such as Juan Vásquez, Mateu Fletxa, and Miguel de Fuenllana influenced a century of rich musical traditions in the Kingdoms of Spain, and indeed further abroad.
Diapente will also feature compositions from the end of the 15th century found in the famous Cancionero de Palacio to connect this younger generation of composers to their esteemed elders.
