Skyky Foundation, a non-profit charity dedicated to improving the lives of children through access to education and help with language learning, reading and writing, and music, will present their fifth annual youth charity concert to benefit SickKids Hospital on November 10.

The committee that organized the concert is made up of high school students, who got together to help other young people in need.

The Concert

The Brampton Rose Orchestra and conductor Samuel Tam are joined by Toronto’s Bedford Trio (Alessia Disimino, violin; Emma Schmiedecke, cello, and Jialiang Zhu, piano), and other musicians, including two talented high school students, Rowan Sawarna-Small and Gordon Lin.

Bedford Trio was founded in 2016, and is based in Toronto. They have served as the Artist in Residence at the University of Toronto since 2020/21, coinciding with the inaugural Piano Trio Competition. They have performed across North America and Europe, and initiated a program of performances at senior’s residences and other institutions, as well as working with grade 11 composition students.

Maeve Palmer is a coloratura soprano, a Dora Award winner, among other accolades that include the 2021 Jim and Charlotte Norcop Prize in Song (U of T) for singer showing the most promise. She has sung with Tapestry opera, New Music Concerts, Opera Atelier, and many other ensembles.

Dr. Younggun Kim, pianist, is an active soloist and chamber musician, as well as teaching at the Queen’s University and the University of Toronto. The Toronto-based musician’s prize wins include the San Antonio International Competition, Concours International de Piano Francis Poulenc, and Doctor of Musical Arts Recital Competition at the University of Toronto.

Julia Mirzoev, violinist, is a graduate of the University of Toronto, Mcgill University, and the Yale University school of music, and multiple competition prize winner, including first prizes at the Crescendo International competition and Cremona music festival competitions.

The concert includes a diverse repertoire of opera, orchestral and chamber music. The program includes:

  • Tchaikovsky: Waltz of the Flowers (from The Nutcracker, Act II)
  • Beethoven: Triple Concerto in C major, Op. 56: III. Rondo alla polacca (Soloists: Bedford Trio)
  • Gordon Lin: The Great Pearl of the Sea (original composition) (Piano: Gordon Lin)
