The GRAMMY-nominated Miró Quartet will appear in Ontario for three concerts in November, including a stop at Toronto’s Jane Mallett Theatre on November 14. The Quartet is celebrating their 30th anniversary season, and their latest album Home, released earlier this year on the Pentatone label.
In addition to the Toronto date, they’ll be appearing in London on November 15, and Hamilton on the 17th. Their repertoire includes two newly commissioned pieces that appear on their release.
Miró Quartet
Formed in 1995, the Quartet was named after Spanish surrealist artist Joan Miró, whose paintings delve into the mysterious worlds of dreams and fantasy.
The Miró Quartet made a winning debut on the international competition scene, snagging first prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Naumburg Chamber Music Competition, among others. The wins launched an international performing career that has taken them far from their home base of Austin, Texas.
Equally dedicated to education, since 2003, the Miró Quartet has served as the quartet-in-residence at the University of Texas at Austin Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music, and in 2005 they became the first ensemble to receive the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant.
The Quartet was nominated for a 2024 GRAMMY® Award for its album House of Belonging, a project created in collaboration with Conspirare, an Austin-based choral group. Their second album on the Pentatone label, titled Home, dropped in May 2024.
Their 30th anniversary season performance schedule includes stops at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Clark Library in Los Angeles, Chamber Music Detroit, String Theory at the Hunter and Hunter Museum of American Art, and many more. The Quartet will also be launching new collaborations with saxophonist and actor Steven Banks and bass-baritone Joseph Parrish.
The Program
They’ll be performing a trio of pieces that cross the centuries.
- Haydn’s String Quartet in G Major, Op. 77, No. 1;
- Debussy’s String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10;
- Caroline Shaw’s Microfictions vol. 1 – a set of six vivid miniature musical stories inspired by the paintings of Joan Miró (the quartet’s namesake) and the short science fiction of T.R. Darling.
Shaw’s work is one of the newly commissioned pieces that appears on the Quartet’s latest album.
