Restorative Culture: Johnathan Morin, a documentary film directed by Travis Knights, will be available to view online from September 28 to October 14, 2024 in honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The documentary explores the issues of identity and belonging through Morin’s story. Some of the original music in the documentary soundtrack was composed by Johnathan Morin and his collaborators Sophia Perlman and others.

The Film

The project began as a short film commissioned by Luminato Toronto. It was expanded to a feature length documentary via support from the Canada Council for the arts. It screened in Toronto in August as part of the opening night gala for the Toronto International Tap Dance Festival in August.

Today, tap dancer Johnathan Morin lives in Toronto. He was born in amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton), but raised in foster care, where he lost touch with his family’s Nehiyaw (Cree) heritage. It’s a journey of self discovery as he explores his love of tap dance, an African American art form, while also fulfilling his desire to know more about Nehiyaw music, dance, and culture.

Along the way, he’s asked to make a sacrifice that changes his life.

33 year-old Johnathan is a fixture in the tap dance community, and has a reputation that extends across Canada, and around the world. He co-produces and co-directs Rhythm and Sound Dance Company alongside Cori Giannotta, and teaches tap dance in the city. The dancer and choreographer is also known as a speaker.

He was nominated for a Dora Award for his performance in the Legacy Tap Dance Concert, presented by dance Immersion in association with Canadian Stage, and choreographed by Travis Knights, Lisa La Touch and guests in 2022.

Johnathan has performed and worked with the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Sarah Reich’s Tap Music Project, Vancouver International Tap Festival, and the Toronto International Tap Festival.

Film producer/curator Travis Knights learned tap from an early age from legend Ethel Bruneau. As a performer, he’s toured with Tap Dogs, Tapestry Dance Company, Anandam Dance Theatre, and self-produced the Tap Love Tour.

Accolades include the 2020 Jaqueline Lemieux Prize for outstanding contribution to dance in Canada, and a Dora Award win for Outstanding Performance in Dance Immersion’s Tap Legacy Concert.

Travis’ production company released Restorative Culture: Johnathan Morin in 2024, and his full length original dance work The Mars Project will premiere at Fall For Dance North.
