Jazz Bistro: Dave Young: Generations

Jazz Bistro, 251 Victoria St., $20/cover.

Canadian jazz legend Dave Young’s monthly ‘Generations’ series at the Jazz Bistro features Christian Antonacci (trumpet), Ewen Farncombe (piano), and Ethan Ardelli (drums) this Tuesday. He will be back at the JB later in the week on Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th, with his own quintet: Kevin Turcotte (Trumpet), Perry White (sax), Brian Dickinson (piano), and Davide Di Renzo (drums), for ‘Tribute to Cedar Walton’, an American hard bop icon. Good times. Info here.

Caledon Music Fesitval: Tasting Notes

Wednesday, August 7, 7:30 p.m.
Davis Family Sunflower Farm, Caledon East, 15770 Mountainview Road, Caledon East, ON, $25+

Caledon has been in hot media focus since late 2022 when the Ford government announced its plan to bring development into the Greenbelt. The beauty and ecological importance of the Greenbelt is hard to describe to city dwellers — unless, you experience it in-person, and this may be one of the best ways to get out and enjoy Caledon in peak summer. For the 2024 season, Caledon Music Festival is presenting four concerts, and this is their second concert, located at the Davis Family Farm, at the peak of its sunflower field splendour. A light and beautiful program of flute, piano, cello, and percussion music will fill out the summer evening sky, and, being just a short drive away from Toronto, you can ease back to the city after the concert, bringing the beauty of the countryside in your heart to last you through the week. Pack your lawn blankets and folding chairs, and gently go. Info here.

Lula Lounge: Salsa Saturday with Yani Borrell + DJ Van Gogh + Baila B!

Saturday, August 10, 9 p.m.
Beginner’s Dance Lesson opens, $36.58+

Live band and dancing is always a solid choice for a weekend night out. Lula Lounge hosts Salsa Fridays, with an introductory dance lesson for the curious, followed by four music sets, two with live band. The best way to experience music is to make, and dance the music. Get your dancing shoes on and come on to the floor for a good time. Info here.

Summer Music in the Garden: The Art of Expression: Ngoma Ensemble

Sunday, August 11, 4 p.m.
Toronto Music Garden, Harbourfront Centre. Free.

Ngoma means drum and dance in Swahili. We are blessed with genuine and authentic community heritage music and arts organizations in Toronto, and this Sunday afternoon, the Harbourfront Centre will host a lovely afternoon concert with Ngoma Ensemble, with riches from Afrobeat, Latin, and hip-hop, by the lake. Come on down to the water, and sway and dance on! Info here.
