Toronto Summer Music (TSM) has announced the details of their TSM Free Concert Series for 2024. The Series, presented by TD Bank Group (TD), includes Kids Concerts, noon concerts, masterclasses, sensory-friendly concerts, and SHUFFLE concerts.

“We are grateful to TD for their continued and generous support of Toronto Summer Music which makes it possible for us to offer this diverse series of free concerts to residents and visitors to our city,” said Jonathan Crow, Artistic Director, Toronto Summer Music.

Kids Concerts

Intended for kids between the ages of five and 12, this series introduces the younger set to the world of classical music. Concerts are held at Walter Hall at 11 a.m., and while free, tickets required to reserve your place. Tickets are available as of June 17 here.

  • Millan & Faye Wednesday, July 17: featuring soprano Kyra Millan & pianist Tina Faye
  • Canadian Brass Wednesday, July 24: featuring the internationally celebrated ensemble

Academy Noon Concerts

These one-hour concerts will showcase the performers from the Toronto Summer Music Academy for Emerging Artists, an intensive training program that runs concurrently with the TSM Festival. The concerts takes place at Heliconian Hall at noon.

  • Wednesday, July 17 | Mozart: Divertimento in E-flat Major, K. 563, with Ria Honda, Daniel Simmons, Elliot Sloss
  • Thursday, July 18 | Smetana: Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 15, with Eric Tsai, Juliana Moroz, Yumi Jang; Schoenberg: String Trio, Op. 45 with Lauren Conroy, Celia Morin, Kelcey Howell
  • Friday, July 19 | Martinu: Three Madrigals, with Kenneth Naito, Jie-Ling (Jennie) Tang; Shostakovich: Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57, with Hudson Chung, Tsubasa Muramatsu, David Montreuil, Hyunah Lee, Jiarong Li
  • Wednesday, July 31 | Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50, with Eric Tsai, Hyunah Lee, Jiarong Li
  • Thursday, August 1 | Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (arr. Dmitry Sitkovetsky), with Hudson Chung, David Montreuil, Elliot Sloss; Florence Price: Piano Quintet in A minor, with Lauren Conroy, Ria Honda, Daniel Simmons, Kelcey Howell, Yumi Jang
  • Friday, August 2 | Beethoven: String Quintet inn C Major, Op. 29, “Storm”, with Tsubasa Muramatsu, Kenneth Naito, Celia Morin, Jie-Ling (Jennie) Tang, Juliana Moroz

Sensory Friendly Concert

A family-friendly concert that is accessible to neurodiverse and disabled audience members who otherwise face barriers in attending live shows. The concert takes place in the Lobby of the Edward Johnson Building (U of T Faculty of Music) at 11 a.m..

  • Xenia Concerts and Toronto Summer Music present: Millan & Faye Saturday, July 20, with soprano Kyra Millan and pianist Tina Faye.

Shuffle Concerts

Eclectic programs in a one-hour format that spotlight the talents of next-generation classical music stars. The concerts take place at Heliconian Hall (5 p.m.)

  • A Light Exists in Spring Tuesday, July 16 | Duo CBJ & MH with oboist Caitlin Broms-Jacobs and pianist Madeline Hildebrand in a program of Rachmaninoff, Bartók, Pavel Haas, and more.
  • The Tortured Poets Department Wednesday, July 17 | An evening of song and arias, centred around Schumann’s Dichterliebe, presented by mezzo-soprano Alex Hetherington and pianist Vlad Soloviev.
  • The Taylor Academy Thursday, July 18 | A showcase featuring the stars of The Taylor Academy.
  • Sense of a Woman Tuesday, July 23 | The award-winning duo of violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves in a program of female composers, including the masterpiece by the newly discovered 19th century violinist/composer Amanda Maier.
  • HATCH Ensemble Wednesday, July 24 | Continuum Contemporary Music’s HATCH program brings together early career performers and composers for artistic and professional development with a focus on contemporary chamber music.
  • The Taylor Academy Thursday, July 20
  • A showcase featuring the rising stars of The Taylor Academy.

Masterclasses

A series of masterclasses will take place in Walter Hall at 3:00 p.m. (except for July 30, when it takes place at 2:00 p.m.). They are open to the general public to observe.

  • Art Song Masterclass with Dame Sarah Connolly Friday, July 12, featuring Art of Song Fellows.
  • Chamber Music Masterclass with Philip Chiu Tuesday, July 16, featuring Chamber Music Institute Fellows.
  • Art Song Masterclass with Joseph Middleton Friday, July 19, featuring Art of Song Fellows.
  • Rising Stars Masterclass with Jonathan Crow Monday, July 22, featuring Winners of the Unionville Music Competition.
  • Chamber Music Masterclass with Rachel Mercer Friday, July 26, featuring Chamber Music Institute Fellows.
  • Chamber Music Masterclass with Yura Lee Tuesday, July 30, featuring Chamber Music Institute Fellows.

Community Showcase

A group of enthusiastic amateur musicians enrol in the TSM Community Program each summer to study and then perform with their mentors, among the leading professionals in the classical music world. The Community Showcase is a casual day-long even of music making that takes place between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., with details to be confirmed.
