The Royal Conservatory of Music, in partnership with The Daniels Corporation, has announced the establishment of the My Piece of the City program. It’s an initiative designed to offer more equitable access to presenting concerts and shows on Koerner Hall’s stage to smaller cultural organizations and individuals.

The Daniels Corporation is a Canadian builders/developers that has been operating in the Greater Toronto Area for more than four decades. The company is the developer of TIFF Bell Lightbox, and the City of the Arts community on the East Bayfront, along with the revitalization of much of the Regent Park community.

The program was established via funds that were raised from a gala presentation of Songs from The Journey, a show that’s premiering this summer.

Songs from The Journey

The Journey Musical is more than just musical theatre, it’s a production that tells the stories of Regent Park, Canada’s oldest and largest housing project, and its transformation into a thriving community. The musical was performed at Daniel’s Spectrum in Regent Park from 2013 to 2018.

That production raised more than $4.4 million to support the venue, Daniels’ Spectrum, as a hub for the arts and culture in Regent Park.

Songs from The Journey takes highlights from that show, and puts it onto the prominent stage of Koerner Hall.

Charlotte Siegel, a member of the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio, will perform, along with Canadian icons Jackie Richardson, Quisha Wint and Gavin Hope, and emerging artists Trevlyn Kennedy and Stacy Darko.

  • The show will debut on June 21, 2024. Tickets and more information [HERE].

Koerner Hall: Accessibity

Koerner Hall rental rates are are available on a subsidized basis for non-profit arts organizations. My Piece of the City expands on that concept to make the acoustically-friendly venue accessible to a wider range of arts presenters. That will mean:

  • Full or partial financial assistance to rent Koerner Hall;
  • It’s available to culturally specific, ethno-cultural, and equity seeking arts and non-profit groups, artist collectives, individual artists, or large organizations;
  • Priority will be given to projects that engage, promote, or present from priority groups, which can include Indigenous peoples, newcomers to Canada and immigrants, racialized communities, ethno-cultural or culturally specific groups, 2SLGBTQIA+, members of official language minority communities, persons with disabilities, among others.

The RCM’s current rental partners are also encouraged to apply if a specific concert or event meets the criteria.

How to Apply

  • Intake will start May 15, 2024 and close July 1, 2024;
  • Applications can be submitted for projects, events, and concerts occurring between September 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025.

Applications will be evaluated by a jury of community members.

  • Applications and full details available [HERE].
